Upcoming Exhibit: TEN EYCK by Ugo Nonis
Opening Reception: December 3rd
Fearing a lack of creativity and talent, Ugo Nonis spent many years hiding behind his computer, working in motion graphics. It's often easier to follow orders than to pave your own path, so he deliberately steered away from creating his own artwork.
As a child he was introduced to art by his father, a talented sculptor. Decades later, among the banality of everyday occupation, he felt compelled to revisit an artistic way of life. Naturally through this process he made a connection with his family.
Today Ugo's artwork and his process is inspired by the people in his life, his relationships. Each painting is an exploration of someone he knows a fond memory, a lost opportunity, a wish, a resentment.
Most of the time, as I paint, I think about people I know or situationsIve encountered and I represent them in a way I can easilyrecognize.
My method is straight forward: I grab some markers and a canvas, and I begin. Focused on a specific relationship, I follow my hand andlet it guide me. Eventually my mind wanders and I allow outsideelements to influence me, losing myself in the process. After a whileI step back to look at the work as a whole, the bigger picture. It oftenspeaks to me, and I listen; and once I discover a new direction, Ire-approach the canvas.
Ugo never went to art school or thought about what type of art he wanted to make, he simply practiced what came naturally; daydreaming with a paintbrush in hand. He has listened and learned and grown. And he is no longer hiding.
Ugo Nonis was born and raised in Paris, France. He moved to New York City in 2000, and he currently lives in Venice Beach, California.
